Introduction-

cream-jar-2hEver since I started making facial creams about 35 years ago, I have been struck by the magical alchemy of the process. Creams are sublime creations, and creating a cream empowers me. I had watched my mother buy expensive creams for years, usually wafting a chemical scent. I knew that could not be my future, as I could not tolerate the odour. So when I learned to make creams and chose my ingredients, I felt a great freedom.

Debra Nuzzi, who worked from Rosemary Gladstar’s original recipe, taught me how to make my first cream many years ago. Many of the facial cream recipes that have emerged subsequently originated with Rosemary!

The first video on cream making uses Rosemary’s technique and recipe. It is a good cream for at-home use but does not use a preservative or an enduring emulsifier. So, it is very pure but is an example of a recipe, not a formula. One is not better than the other; they just have different pluses and minuses.

The second video is an updated formula of rose cream, using a preservative and an emulsifier. It is preferable for more commercial use, as theoretically, it will take longer to expire due to the preservative and should hold together better because of the emulsifier.

There are so many variations of creams one can create. Feel free to try different mixes. Look for substitutes if you are allergic, sensitive, or indifferent to certain ingredients. Keep your hands, equipment, and surroundings immaculately clean while working, and do not breathe or cough into the mixture.

Yarrow makes a great ingredient for facial creamWhile experimenting, make a small batch to ensure the cream works. Select and use economically priced oils and kinds of butter for this first trial. Initially, substitute almond and coconut oil for seabuckthorn and rosehip seed to experiment on less pricey prototypes. This will give you some practice in mixing and combining ingredients before trying the recipes with precious ingredients.

One drawback of homemade, unpreserved creams is that they only last a while. But when the ingredients are fresh, your methods sanitary, and the bulk of the mixture is stored in the fridge, they have a decent lifespan of at least six months, but I have had some last up to two years. If you use a preservative, chances are high that the mixture will last significantly longer. The other potential problem with homemade creams is that oil and water dislike mixing. Sometimes, creams do not come together.

An attitude of acceptance is important when making products ranging from masks to creams. They may vary slightly each time, so learn to go with the flow and appreciate their natural differences—so call up both your artistic and scientific sides to be present during the cosmetic-making process.

Allow your inner scientist to write down what does and does not work for you. Let your inner artist play as you learn from each creation.

When the products come together (which is the most likely outcome), they are pure, eminent and nutritive. Like good quality homemade food, they are better than anything you can buy!

*Note—Lanolin is often used as an emulsifier in older-style, homemade creams and lotions. If you have a wool allergy, do not use lanolin. Instead, seek out another emulsifier (something that helps bind water and oil). Lecithin is sometimes used and does work well for entirely natural recipes, but it may make the product sticky.

Making Rosemary’s Facial Cream Recipe- The Old School Approach

This recipe makes an excellent at-home product but does not use a preservative. It relies on lecithin as the emulsifier.

Troubleshooting why creams don’t come together:

Your formulating section contains more ideas, including my discussion of using commercial formulas for creams and lotions that contain commercial emulsifiers and preservatives.

In the video above, I put oil into the water.
a) Recently, Rosemary reversed the process and now drizzles water into the oil. This is a suitable method for this cream, as it is very thick, and the water in the oil method is helpful for very thick creams. Our other cream and lotion recipes rely on the oil-in-water technique. Using the water-in-oil method, you could also easily make the cream using that recipe. When combined, Could you ensure the water and oil are at the same temperatures?

b) An emulsion’s oil and water phase must be stirred for a decent time. Creams can be stirred, cooled, stirred, and sometimes cooled again until they form

Some other tips for natural cream recipes:

c)If you do not use a commercial emulsifier, a little lecithin may help better combine the water and oil but make the final product stickier.

d) Commercial eco emulsifiers in newer-style facial cream formulas better combine the cream’s water and oil phases. Indeed, these are an option. Some of the creams in your Practical Potions Journal rely on soy or vegetable emulsifiers.

e) My students also use an immersion or stick blender to make creams with good results. These methods must be practiced to master the best technique for you. So, use what you have, have fun, use less expensive ingredients, and make smaller batches to practice when starting.

Modern Style, Rose Cream Commercial Formula Video Using A Preservative and Emulsifiers

You can find this recipe in your download at the bottom of the page. Note that the cream could be made using the water-in-oil approach. If you feel experimental, try small batches both ways and see what you prefer. When using Olive M as the emulsifier, the creation may take 24 hours to reach its final thickness.
