Worwood’s system is unique because it uses essential oil personality types. The way to balance individuals is also through using essential oils.
An Introduction to Aroma-Genera

I was lucky enough to take Valerie Worwood’s workshop many years ago. Here are a few highlights.
This fun and valuable aromatic system may determine which essential oils are healing to various personality types in two ways.
- Which scents do you like: spices, woods, fruits, florals, resins, roots, herbs, leaves and seeds?
- Which of the personality profiles fit the best? A combination of these two variables should determine which one of the nine types you are.
When out of balance, use the oils from the part of the plant that is the same as your personality type.
Seedies would use seed oils for their baths and healing, and leafies would use leaves. This system is fully rooted in aromatherapy.
Let’s take another imaginative journey through the aromatic world, exploring the personalities expressed through the scents of the woodie, rootie, leafie, spicie, fruitie, floral, herbie, resinie, and seedie essences. Each scent category brings to life a unique set of characteristics and preferences. We will expand on Worwood’s work in the write-up and stay true to it in the video.
Personality Types-
Spicies – The Firecrackers and Pioneers
Lovers of spicie scents such as cinnamon, clove, and black pepper are the firecrackers and pioneers. Bold, adventurous, and often ahead of their time, they spark change and inspire action. Their fragrance choices evoke the warmth and excitement of exploring uncharted territories, igniting the senses and the imagination. Outgoing, extroverted, exhibitionist, outrageous. Spicies are risk-takers and need to be noticed.
Woodies – The Stalwarts and Protectors
Those drawn to woodie scents like cedarwood, sandalwood, and oak are often seen as stalwarts and protectors. They embody strength, stability, and a comforting presence that others usually rely on. Along with rooties and herbs, they are the backbone of their communities, much like the ancient trees that inspire their favourite fragrances, offering shelter and support with their enduring nature. Woodies are firm, persistent, unyielding, stubborn and leaders.
Fruities – The Energizers and Enthusiasts
Those attracted to fruitie scents like lemon, apple, and bergamot are the energizers and enthusiasts. Their vibrant, bubbly personalities are infectious, spreading joy and positivity wherever they go. They are lively, and their zest for life is as palpable as the juicy, tantalizing aromas they adore. Fruities are easy to get along with, bright, sparkling, fun and conforming.
Florals – The Romantics and Beautifiers
Individuals who love floral scents like rose, lavender, and jasmine are the romantics and beautifiers. They have an innate appreciation for beauty and grace, and their presence often brings a sense of harmony and elegance. They are dramatic, and their fragrance choices speak to their love for the delicate and the refined, akin to a beautifully curated garden. Florals love to be the center of attention, be admired, and stand out.
Resinies – The Time Travelers and Sages
Lovers of resin scents such as frankincense, myrrh, and amber are the time travellers and sages. They possess a deep sense of history and spirituality, often serving as the bridge between the past and present. Their fragrance choices are rich and profound, carrying the weight of ancient stories and the depth of spiritual journeying. The Resinies are serious types. Deeply introspective, they pursue knowledge and wisdom with a quiet intensity. They strive for position and purpose- and can be obstinate and dogmatic.
Rooties -The Anchors and Seekers
Individuals who prefer rootie scents such as vetiver, ginger, and patchouli are the anchors and seekers of the world. Their fragrance choices suggest a deep connection to the earth, embodying life’s hidden mysteries and grounding force. Rooties are peacemakers; rooties wish to be in union with everything. They are grounded, gentle, patient, loyal and traditional.
Herbies -The Nurturers
Those drawn to herbie scents like rosemary, thyme, and cilantro are the nurturers and caretakers. With earthy knowledge and a caring spirit, they tend to both the earth and the soul. Their scent preferences reflect a connection to the healing power of herbs, embodying the essence of care and wisdom. Herbies are generous, caring, and welcoming. They are heart-based and sometimes martyrs.
Leafies – The Seekers
Those who gravitate towards leafie scents like basil, mint, and eucalyptus are often seen as scholars, writers and seekers. With a natural ability to search and be original, they bring fresh air to any situation. Their choice of scents reflects a love for rejuvenation and healing, mirroring green leaves’ crisp, invigorating essence. Leafies long to connect with the environment and are intellectual and objective.
Seedies – The Creators and Internal Journeyers
Finally, the creators and internal explorers are those attracted to seedie scents like coriander, caraway, and fennel. They see the world as a place of endless possibility, where new ideas can sprout from the smallest beginnings. Their preference for these scents mirrors a fascination with the potential that lies in the essence of a seed, ready to grow and transform the world. Seedies are creative and imaginative, sometimes deep and misunderstood, and occasionally cold and outsiders.

I’d appreciate it if you could delve into these categories, discover your connections to these scents, and explore how you can use them to express your unique identities in the art of perfumery.
